Tools usage as a differentiator

In most biological aspects, human beings are similar to other living organisms. We are made up of cells and have quite similar chemical compositions. Compared with other species, we are not superior when it comes to speed, agility, strength, stamina, vision, or hearing. However, one way we are better is our use of technology and tools to enhance our abilities. Our history of tool usage has a direct positive correlation with progress and prosperity of our societies.

Human beings are not the fastest animal on earth, but the aeroplanes we built can fly faster than the Peregrine Falcon, the automobiles we designed can run faster than the Cheetah on land, and the speed boats we made can travel faster than the Black Marlin. We are not the fastest or strongest or the one with most endurance, but we can beat the best using a tool we invented. Similarly, civilizations that had invented and used better tools and technology thrived over civilizations that had a more basic existence.

Bill Gates said: “If you give people tools, and they use their natural abilities and their curiosity, they will develop things in ways that will surprise you very much beyond what you might have expected.”

Organizations have very similar behavior. The use of right tools for the right work is an undeniable competitive advantage for any enterprise. For knowledge workers advanced collaboration and work management tools that are accessible from anywhere, anytime, on any device is an important weapon in the arsenal to create sustained competitive advantage. But often times it is seen that organizations make the wrong choice of tools. For example, using spreadsheets and email for Meeting Agenda, Minutes, Actions Items, Decisions would be similar to walking into a war zone today with a bow and arrow.

Generic tools like email and spreadsheets are like the poverty of the full stomach: ‘they provide all the things you need, but none of the things you desire’. The need of the day is specific tools that are intelligent enough to take care of the clerical and mundane work and allows knowledge workers to focus on the core business value enhancements.
